Kinesiotape is a flexible, latex-free, state-of-the-art tape that is applied to soft tissues to promote proprioceptive input to help with stability and selectively facilitate or inhibit muscle firing. Application of this tape by a trained professional may also help to increase lymphatic drainage, improves proprioception and increases neuromuscular efficiency so an athlete may return from injury faster and even reduce their predisposition to injury. Specific techniques of kinesiotaping may also be administered to significantly reduce bruising and swelling associated with acute injuries. This is done by targeting different receptors within the somatosensory system as well as microscopically lifting the skin to form convolutions, thus increasing interstitial space and allowing for a decrease in inflammation of the affected areas. Kinesiotape is safe for populations ranging from pediatric to geriatric, and is wearable for days at a time.
